Important Reminders in Keeping Your Dog Healthy

Being a pet owner, specifically a dog owner, is not just a walk in the park. There are responsibilities tied to having a furry friend. Just as your pet pooch provides you with a lot of love and happiness by keeping you company, protecting you and your home, cheering you up on rough days, and giving you stress relief, you should also make sure to keep your beloved companion healthy and happy.

Maintaining your dog’s proper health would require more than just feeding, walking, and bathing them. It’s important to know your dog well in order to personalize the care you give them based on their daily habits and preferences. However, in any dog or even pet in general, it is important to remember these steps in order to make sure that they are in good health:

  • Keep your dog on its healthy weight

Although you may have the tendency to feed your dog as much and as often as they please it is important to keep them at their optimum weight. Based on your dog’s breed, stature, and gender, there is a range of weight which is healthy for them. Overweight dogs are just as unhealthy as underweight ones and may cause some health problems.

  • Feed your dog a balanced and nutritious diet

Just as we all need to eat a well-balanced meal, your dog should have a balanced and nutritious diet too. Excessive meat and protein may cause benign or even cancerous cysts to appear in their late age, and too much carbohydrate will cause them to be overweight. Feeding them once or twice a day and alternating between human food and dog food are good ways of keeping their diet healthy.

  • Visit your dog’s veterinarian once each year

Your dog needs a periodic medical check-up too! Bring your dog to the vet at least once a year even when there is nothing wrong. Having regular check-ups is a good way to make sure that your dog stays healthy, and will give you the peace of mind on the condition of your furry friend.

  • Have your dog vaccinated

Even while they are still a puppy, it is already important to have your pooch vaccinated in order to protect them from potentially deadly diseases such as parvo, distemper, and rabies.

  • Keep your dog free from parasites

Parasites such as ticks, fleas, and lice can cause more than just itch to your furry friend. These can potentially cause serious illnesses which will be difficult to treat later on. Consult your vet on the best product to keep your dog parasite-free.

Lastly, one thing you can do in order to make sure that you will be worry-free when it comes to your dog’s health is to provide them with insurance. At The Insured Pet, we help keep your dog covered, by analyzing and choosing the best possible insurance companyfor you. It’s time for you to protect them. Allow The Insured Pet to help.
